Thursday 17 September
After picking up material from the Information Centre, we
headed up to Broken Earth Café. This café has been built high up on top of a
tailings heap opposite the centre of town. Amazing views over the city. There
is also a memorial to the miners up here which is a very fitting tribute to
those who lost their lives in the mines. We sat poring over our brochures,
planning our day over a lovely cup of coffee.

Then we headed out to Silverton. A ghost mining town, and
lunch in the Silverton Hotel.
This town and the area around it have seen many film crews,
the most famous of which were the Mad Max films. There’s a museum to these
films here adding to the already interesting collection of historic buildings
from the time when Silverton was a prosperous silver mining town.

A welcome beer on a very hot day
|
It was a very hot day so it was appropriate to have a beer
with our counter lunch.
A short drive further out of town we visited Mundi Mundi
Lookout. Luckily we had the place to ourselves. The view from here is
astonishing and really hits home how vast this country is. We looked out over
the Mundi Mundi Plains which stretch flat to the horizon.
After a brief respite and cup of tea back at our
accommodation we headed for the Sculpture Symposium. Sadly the weather was
coming in and we had quite a heavy downpour while we were there. We did manage
to have a short sit down with our wine and nibbles to look at the incredible
views. No fabulous sunset photos with the sculptures though. We picked up pizza
on our way home to have in house with another glass of wine.

the most famous sculpture. The sun sets and shines directly through the hole. Some use it for other fun photos |
