Friday 18 September
The day started off wet but undeterred we went into town to
follow the heritage walking tour. There are some lovely old buildings in the
city. Though it is disappointing that so much heritage has been lost to
modernisation.

Outside the Council Chambers

The colonnades remain, but many of the beautiful balconies have been enclosed

 |
The Post Office in most country towns is always an imposing building

 |
Likewise the Courthouse

The Palace Hotel by day

After our walk we treated ourselves to a genuine milkshake
in the 50s style Bell’s Milk Bar. Not only is it 50s style it has been a milk
bar since the 50s! At least here the desire to modernise has not happened.
We returned to the city to visit the Silver City Mint and Art Centre. Here you can buy locally made pieces of silver jewellery. The drawcard, though is The Big Picture, the largest acrylic painting on canvas in the world. Painted by the owner's brother, Peter Anderson.
Later in the day we headed out once again to the Living
Desert Park and Sculpture Symposium. Now we know the set up (unfortunately the
brochure was not helpful in that respect), we had the time to take the Cultural
Walk Trail and Flora Trail in the Living Desert section of the Park. Then we
returned to the Sculpture Symposium for the sunset again. Some cloud was
forming on the western horizon, so it was not as spectacular as it could have
been because the cloud was right on the horizon.

Time for a toilet break? I think not!
|
 |
Just like a painting. The views go for miles.
|
Returning to the city once again we had a wonderful dinner
at the Astra Hotel. Better than at The Palace! A lovely way to finish off our visit to this most
interesting Outback city.
